Vertical blinds

The default answer for patio doors, sliding doors and any opening wider than it is tall. Vanes hang from a track, tilt for light and stack tight to one side so the door still works.

What vertical blinds are

Individual vanes suspended from a headrail track. A wand or chain tilts every vane together; a draw cord or the wand itself traverses them along the track. Because the weight hangs from a track rather than a single tube, verticals cover very wide openings that no roller or Roman could span in one piece.

Vane materials

  • PVC / vinyl — the workhorse. Wipes clean, ignores humidity, lowest cost.
  • Fabric vanes — softer look, available in room-darkening weaves, can be grooved into a PVC carrier.
  • Faux wood vanes — the look of a shutter with the operation of a vertical.
  • Sheer verticals — fabric vanes suspended between two sheer facings, so the whole thing reads as a sheer when closed.

Stacking and draw

Stack direction is the decision installers get called back about. Vanes should always park on the fixed side of a sliding door, never in front of the handle or the walking path. On a wide picture window a split draw looks balanced and halves the stack depth at each end.

What to compare in the photos

  • Stack depth at the end of the track when fully open.
  • Vane width — wider vanes mean a cleaner look and fewer of them.
  • Whether the headrail is exposed or hidden behind a valance.
  • Light gaps between vanes when fully tilted.
  • Inside versus outside mount on doors with narrow surrounding trim.

Frequently asked questions

Are vertical blinds still used?
Yes — on patio and sliding doors they remain the most practical option, because vanes stack tight to one side and still tilt for light control. Modern fabric and faux wood vanes look nothing like the old vinyl ones.
Which way should vertical blinds stack?
Stack away from the operating side of the door so the vanes never sit in the doorway. Split stack (parting in the middle) suits a centre-opening door or a wide picture window.
What are the alternatives to vertical blinds on a patio door?
Panel track blinds slide flat panels across the same opening for a more contemporary look, and vertical cellular shades add insulation. Compare all three on the same style of door in the library.
Can vertical blinds be cut down or repaired?
Individual vanes are replaceable, which is one of the reasons they survive in rental and high-traffic settings — a damaged vane is swapped rather than the whole blind.
